aniel R. Horne is a versatile illustrator who has done comic book art, covers for magazines and
books, and even for toy packages.
Daniel Horne was tutored by Ken Lager, and got influenced by the western historical
painting tradition. He states that he is of the: "very old school, and proud of it!" This has
led to a painting tecnique, where Horne sculpts the characters before he draws them, and makes
the weapons and costumes as well.
Covers for Dragon Magazine and TSR Led Horne from more doing
covers for more conventional books, to his recent status as being mainly a fantasy-bookcover
artist.
Daniel Horne has made the art for the inner covers of the american paperback versions of Shadow of a Dark Queen (if you have that cover, please PLEASE
mail me a scan of it) and
Rise of a Merchant Prince published by Avon. Some of the art for "Prince" also
appears on the hardcover version.
The general opinion of Feist fans is that the art for the american covers for the
Serpentwar Saga (of which theese two books are the first chapters) is generally
below the quality of the art for Feists other books. I agree totally. I find that Hornes art for
Rise of a Merchant Prince for example mostly looks
like something from the cover of a fantasy version of a Barbara Cartland novel, or from one of
the Fabio books. The covers are nothing but kitsch, and mostly look like a joke to me. Horne has
not managed to catch the feel of fantasy and exitement, that a cover for a Feist book, or any
other fantasy book should do. Based on some of Hornes other artwork (the picture on this page
for example) you know that he could have done better. So why didn't he?
Daniel Horn is introduced on a special Daniel Horne page at the Toy Walt.
